The 10U Yankees hosted The Nationals in the championship game after a week’s worth of preliminary games during the last full week of school. Chase Corpuz was so excited about school being over that he smashed the very first pitch of the game down to 3rd base, but Cooper Magnotta wasn’t having any of it. He promptly made the play at first to get things rolling for the Yankees’ defense. Cooper was not done with damage in the opening frame as his bases loaded 2B brought home a few friends giving his squad the early 3-0 lead. Nats catcher, Matt Dixon, nailed a would-be thief stealing third, which saved a run in the b-1st. Yankees pitching surrendered the Nats initial run walking 4 in the 2nd, but they could not further capitalize on the opportunity. The Nats Tommy Beherens settled down in the b-2nd without allowing a ball out of the infield, and momentum was swinging as The Nats tied things up in the t-3rd with singles by Corpuz, Colby Bluestein, and Matt Dixon. Hunter Hannum’s RBI single put his team back in the lead, scoring Matthew Laffman after a leadoff single. The Nats Adam Cypriano kept things close through his two innings of work, mowing down 5 Yankees in his stint on the mound. Yankees second baseman, Niyam Patel, and Nationals SS, Chase Corpuz, each caught pop fly’s to end opposition threats in the 4th inning. The Yankees brought in their finisher, Ian Harper, to close down The Nats’ bats, as he proceeded to strike out 2 of the 3 batters he faced. His teammate, Matthew Laffman, did far worse damage to The Nats chances, tripling home 3 in the b-5th. The Bluestein brothers, Colby and Bryce, just didn’t have their stuff on the mound and were unable to keep the Bronx Bombers off the base paths in the last inning. Charlie Liu eventually singled home the 5th and final run of the inning to end the game 9-3, and send his 10U Yankees to the championship trophies. 9 of 12 Nats batters reached base in 1 of their 2 plate appearances. Charlie Liu was 2-3 with 2 RBI, Hunter Hannum was 3-3 with 2 RBI, & Matthew Laffman carried the big lumber for the NYY going 3-3, with a triple, 2 runs, and 3 RBI!
